Generation Growers

Generation Growers is a project working to bridge the gap between the youth and older adults in our community to make a more connected and sustainable town. Older adults work with members of the Green Team to cultivate and grow not only produce, but their knowledge and relationships with one another. In the garden beds we grow things like lettuce, carrots, sunflowers, tomatoes and kale, and recently we planted blueberry bushes, peach trees, and apple trees that should grow fruit in a few years. There is also an amphitheater for classes to be held outdoors and checkers tables that can be used with supplies from the front office. The garden supplies for food for Green Team members, Generation Growers, the cafeteria, and eventually the food pantry. Growing locally is a huge way to decrease your carbon footprint because a large amount of carbon is used in transporting your foods from other parts of the world to your local grocery store. For example, during the summer most of our produce in stores comes from California which is over three thousand miles away! Growing locally you get fresher food, a greater sense of community, and a lesser carbon footprint. Last year we were able to host our first garden cooking competition and dinner using foods we had grown ourselves. Many members of the community were able to try dishes made by Green Team, have some veggie pizza made by a local chef as well as listen to music played by a few members of the chamber orchestra. Although Generation Growers is angled towards older adults and youth, all ages are welcome, just let us know if you want to get involved!

Eat local, grow local, and buy local.
